The debut disc from Blackout Velvet is hard as woodpecker lips!  If
you like your tunes jackhammered into your head, then pile-driven
down your spine, this is for you.  This fresh band from Kansas City lays
it down with massive drums, a bass that sounds deeper than my last
depression, and a shredding guitar.  Although at times it was difficult
to understand the lyrics, perhaps that's for the best.  The
understandable ones sounding like they could drive you to drink.
Heavy tunes like "So Far Down" and "Break Me" are offset by the
melodic intro to "Nancy" and the very tasty chord progression of "Feel
Again".  On "Can You Feel It", the bands toys with the traditional
arrangement by dropping out the guitar during the verses to great
effect.  The most radio ready track is "I've Fallen", which features a
very cool breakdown to bass/drums, and drives it home at the end.
The disc ends on a ballsy note: a heavy metal instrumental entitled
"Pharoh's Curse".  The transition between verse and chorus patterns
here keeps the song from growing stale.
Overall, drummer Chris John provides a solid beat, with a number of
nice spicy accents on the ride cymbal sprinkled throughout.  Bassist
Chris Jessee delivers the meatiest bass tones since Geezer Butler,
but shows an almost John Entwhistle-like sense of movement,
particularly on "Break Me" and "Nancy".  His rhythm is very in the
pocket, and is a bit more understated than previous work by this four
string star.  The guitars are very heavy and provide the metal edge
with a cutting tone.  Solos might be better served with a touch of mid
and low-mid EQ, but are delivered with an intensity and drive that that
send a clear warning that Tim Stark is not to be taken lightly.
